NEW 10-YEAR SUPER VISA FOR PARENTS AND GRANDPARENTS LIVING ABROAD

The Department of Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) has introduced a new 10-year multiple-entry Super Visa for parents and grandparents who wish to visit their children and grandchildren in Canada.

Until now, visiting parents or grandparents could only remain in Canada for a maximum of six months at a time. After that, they would have to leave the country and apply to re-enter.

Now, parents and grandparents who are approved for a Super Visa will receive a multiple-entry visa valid for 10 years. Although the visa is valid for 10 years, entry on the visa is only permitted for up to two years at a time. However, Super Visa holders who are in Canada, may apply before their permitted period of stay expires to extend their stay for up to another two years at a time. By taking maximum advantage of the Super Visa privileges, a parent or grandparent could conceivably remain in Canada for the entire 10 year period without ever having to leave the country

Super Visa applicants must meet a number of requirements, including:

the child or grandchild living in Canada must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident
the child or grandchild must meet a minimum income threshold
the child or grandchild must enter into an agreement with the Canadian government to support the visiting parent or grandparent during their time in Canada
the parent or grandparent must successfully complete an immigration medical examination, and
the parent or grandparent must purchase Canadian medical insurance coverage for the duration of their stay
Comment: The new Super Visa will facilitate the temporary entry into Canada of parents and grandparents who wish to visit Canada for longer than they could under the usual six-month visitor visa. At the same time,  parents and grandparents who  want to come to Canada for extended periods of time but who may not necessarily wish to immigrate to Canada now have the option of remaining in the country for up to 10 years. Last, the Super Visa will allow families affected by the new two-year moratorium on parent and grandparent sponsorships to bring their family members to Canada as visitors for extended periods of time.
